What can I possibly do to help comfort her? 

This is the question I asked myself over and over again when my sister in law Amanda lost her perfect son at 21 weeks in 2023. This question is what led to Baskets of Healing. 

The concept is simple: we provide quality, thoughtful postpartum supplies for women’s physical recovery after giving birth. It’s not just things we’re offering though, it’s also a gesture of “We see you and we understand. You are not alone.”

What has struck me along this journey is the many synchronicities that have happened to get these baskets to the women who need them.

The first big synchronicity happened after donating our first basket. We assembled it and gave it to the hospital where Amanda had given birth. Our contact let us know it had been passed along a few weeks later. We felt heartbroken it was needed but grateful it had been received. 

About a month later, Amanda decided to write a blog post about the significance of the candle in the basket. She sent it to me and as I read it I had tears in my eyes. I texted Amanda to let her know how much it moved me, and at that EXACT time, the woman who had received the basket texted Amanda to thank her. She had just recently noticed Amanda’s number included in the letter in the basket. In her text she specifically mentioned the candle and how much it meant to her. 

That synchronistic experience changed my life. I got full body chills and a deep knowing. I knew we were on the right path on this mission to offer comfort and support to women facing this unspeakable tragedy.

Then last year the Tuesday before Thanksgiving I posted on social media asking for donations to assemble ten Baskets of Healing. It was for our yearly Giving Tuesday Fundraiser. Little did I realize, this was actually the wrong day! Giving Tuesday is the Tuesday AFTER Thanksgiving. 

I felt a little embarrassed by my mistake until, a few days after raising the money, we got word that a woman could benefit from receiving a basket. Because I had posted on the “wrong” day and gotten donations earlier than intended, we had a basket ready to go and got it to her just in time. 

This year I posted on the right day. Then only two days later we heard that a woman lost a baby and could benefit from a basket. We had received enough donations to put together a basket for her except for one thing we didn’t have yet, a blanket. Our signature blanket reads, “Faith. Hope. Healing. May prayers of strength and love surround you in your healing” and we knew this was a woman of faith so were sad not to have the blanket for her.  

We reached out to a woman who had ordered a blanket from our wish list, and she told us the blanket wouldn’t arrive until the weekend. Since time is of the essence with these baskets we decided to use a new blanket I had just purchased as a replacement and resigned to the fact we could get her the other blanket at a later date.

That afternoon when I arrived home from picking up my children at school, a new blanket from was sitting on my doorstep. I have no idea why it got delivered two days early, all I know is that it was the final piece to put it all together at just the right time.

These synchronicities bring to mind a passage from Proverbs 16:3 “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” 

This is how I have felt with Baskets of Healing. We have given the mission to a purpose much greater than ourselves, and it is these synchronicities that serve as mini guideposts letting us know we’re on the right path. Each of these moments brings us one step closer to achieving our dream: a world where every childbirth is accompanied by a Basket of Healing and no loss mother is ever left in the dark.
